IIHF 2019 Preview: Great Britain vs Canada Predictions & Betting Odds
May 12, 2019
Great Britain and Canada face off at the Steel Arena in Kosice on Sunday evening (local time) in the IIHF World Championship 2019 for what will be both teams second group game of the tournament.
Both teams suffered 3-1 losses in their opening games, but while that was far from unexpected in the case of Great Britain, far more was expected of Canada.
The expectations for these two teams going into this tournament could hardly be more different, with Great Britain happy to be back among the elite in the top division of the World Championship for the first time in 25 years, while Canada arrived in Slovakia with the goal of returning home with gold medals.
Although there have already been a few upsets at this year’s tournament, there won’t be many IIHF tipsters predicting Great Britain to beat Canada. The Great Britain team rarely gets the opportunity to play world class teams, so their aim in this game will be to compete and keep the score respectable.
Great Britain started the finals with a 3-1 loss to Germany on Saturday afternoon, but against a team that included the second top scorer in the NHL regular season in Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, that was an honourable effort.
It briefly looked as though it could have been better still, when Canadian-born Mike Hammond tied the game at 1-1 early in the third period. However, the Germans quality eventually told.
Canada lost forward John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs to injury on the eve of the tournament and then a suffered an additional blow when they started their campaign with a 3-1 loss to Finland on the opening day, with 18 year-old Kaapo Kakko (certain to be a high pick in the NHL draft next month) scoring twice for Finland.
Finland deserved the victory, although Jonathan Marchessault did draw Canada level at 1-1 in the first period.
